Sheffield metallurgist. Inventor of manganese and silicon steel. He was made Master Cutler, knighted, and created a baronet of Sheffield.
Robert Hadfield is commemorated in the Sir Robert Hadfield Building at the University of Sheffield.
Around the time of Henry Bessemer's death, Sir Robert Hadfield, a Sheffield- born (1858) metallurgist from a steel manufacturing business family, discovered manganese steel - one of the first steel alloys - and silicon steel, the magnetic abilities of which have proven fruitful in engineering in the years since his death in 1940. He published over 200 papers on metallurgical research.
