Ensemble 360 is famous for its brilliant performances, intuitive programming, and amazing music interpretations, from baroque duos, classical quartets to contemporary commissions
Acknowledged by The Guardian newspaper as “one of the most adaptable chamber groups in the country”, Ensemble 360, currently a group of 11 outstanding instrumentalists, is famous for its brilliant performances, courageous programming, and appealing interpretations of music, such as baroque duos, classical quartets and also brand-new commissions.
Formed in 2005 to take up a long-term residency at the Crucible Studio Theatre in Sheffield, they soon garnered a reputation nationally for their performances. The name of the group was chosen as Ensemble 360 due to the intimacy and proximity of the Crucible’s in-the-round environment, which inspired their performance and philosophy to give audiences a full “360-degree experience” that breaks the boundaries of traditional classical music performances.
Ensemble 360 has very much taken on the mantle of the Lindsay String Quartet and were formed by the Crucible Theatre's Music in the Round organisation following the latter's retirement.
Since then the ensemble has remained grounded in their city of origin, Sheffield, through a thriving collaboration as ensemble-in-residence with Music in the Round.
Their residency includes the celebrated annual Sheffield Chamber Music Festival in May of each year, showcasing the ensemble’s adventurous programming of diverse chamber music and pioneering new collaborations with invited international guest artists from the worlds of classical, contemporary, jazz, film, theatre and other art forms.
The group enhances the typical format of classical chamber concerts through the addition of pre-concert talks, performances for children, and chats with the audience. Their thoughtfully curated artistic programmes often take a theme such as a particular composer, city or musical style as their starting point, and can be presented as a standalone concert or extended into a full weekend programme of music and activities.
